"SELECT PRINT MEDIA COVERAGE ON OBASEKI AND PHILIP SHAIBU CRISES A CASE STUDY OF PUNCH AND GUARDIAN NEWSPAPERS"
Franca Onovughakpor Oghenekevwe · HND · MASS COMMUNICATION ( print option)

This study examines the print media coverage of the political crisis between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his former deputy, Philip Shaibu, using Punch and The Guardian newspapers as case studies. The objectives were to identify the frequency of coverage, dominant frames, tone of reportage, and prominence given to the crisis. The study adopted content analysis, analysing selected news stories, features, and editorials published between January 2023 and December 2024. Findings show that both newspapers gave significant attention to the crisis, with Punch providing more critical and conflict-driven headlines, while The Guardian adopted a more neutral and analytical approach. The coverage largely framed the dispute as a political power struggle linked to succession interests in Edo State. The newspapers also tended to highlight implications for governance and party unity. The study concludes that print media play an agenda-setting role in shaping public opinion on political conflicts. It recommends balanced reporting, increased investigative journalism, and avoidance of sensationalism to ensure responsible media practice.

IMPACTS OF CEMENT FACTORY OPERATIONS ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH (A CASE STUDY OF OKPELLA).
Johnson Ebubechukwu Moses · HND · Building Technology

Industrialization has significantly improved the economy of Nigeria, but the threat posed by the development of these industries to the environment and to the inhabitant cannot be left out. Cement factory are known for emitting suspended particulate matter and toxic gases to the environment. This study accessed the impact of the cement factory operation on the environment and human health in okpella community, Edo state, different objective where raised “To identify the health hazard related to cement production in Okpella, to examine the effect of the identified health hazards on humans and workers within the cement factory, to proffer remedial measure that can be put in place to mitigate the effects of the hazards associated to cement production in Okpella”. Questionnaire were developed and administered to the villagers and workers of the cement factory and the data were collected and analyzed Frequency and Percentage method, and Mean score method to validate the research problem exist. It was observed that the means score in the table as analysed by the mean score method is greater than the criterion mean of 2.5 this implies that the research problem exist. It was also observed that identified effect of hazard such as; musculo-skeletal disorders cause by vibration, partial deafness caused by excessive noise, skin disorder, and respiratory problem due to exposure to dust is common among workers in the cement factory hence engineering control is recommended so as to mitigate health hazard within the factory and adjoin community. Based on the strength of the above findings and conclusions, the study offers the following recommendations for mitigating the attendant health hazards among cement industry workers: There is need for management of cement industries to develop a frame-work that will initiate the integration and implementation of safety regulations in cement factories so as to reduce associated health risk; Health promotion program should be integrated by management to help improve works knowledge, attitude and practices regarding to safety measures within the cement factory; Periodic medical examination policy should be adopted by management of cement industries to help reduce cases of health problems among workers of cement industries in Nigeria; Workers in the cement factory should be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) an Implementing engineering control to minimize exposure to dust.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PROFITABILITY OF CASSAVA PROCESSING PRODUCTS IN LAFIA LGA OF NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA
Muktar Idris · HND · Agriculture extension and management

ABSTRACT<br><br> This study examines the profitability of cassava processing products in Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Utilizing a multi-stage sampling technique, the study selected 60 respondents (30 engaged in Garri processing and 30 in Cassava Flour processing) across two districts known for intensive cassava processing. Primary data was collected through structured questionnaires, covering socio-economic characteristics, types of cassava products, costs, returns, and constraints. Data analysis employed both descriptive and inferential statistics, including cost and return assessments. The findings reveal that cassava processing in the area is dominated by women (81.7%), with a significant proportion of processors (40%) aged between 31-40 years. Most respondents (43.3%) have primary education, and farm sizes are typically less than one hectare, indicating small-scale farming. Garri and Cassava Flour emerged as the most processed products, with Garri leading in terms of profitability. Despite Cassava Flour generating higher revenue, Garri's lower production costs result in a better Return on Investment (ROI) of 0.48, compared to 0.31 for Cassava Flour. Key constraints identified include inadequate capital, poor access to markets, and a lack of processing equipment. These results suggest that, although both Garri and Cassava Flour are profitable, Garri processing offers a more favorable profit margin due to its lower cost structure. Addressing the challenges faced by cassava processors, particularly in access to capital and technology, could further enhance profitability in the region.

THE RULINGS ON SADAQ (MAHR) ACCORDING TO THE FOUR SCHOOLS OF ISLAMIC LAW
Murtala Ridwan · BA · Islamic Studies

This project examines the legal concept of Sadaq (Mahr), a mandatory bridal gift from the groom to the bride in Islamic marriage contracts, through the lens of the four major Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali. The study explores the meaning of marriage, its essentials, position of marriage according to the four schools of Islamic law, Sadaq in Islam, meaning, position, and jurisprudential nuances surrounding Sadaq, including its obligatory nature, types (prompt vs. deferred), conditions of validity, minimum and maximum amounts, and implications in the case of divorce or death. While all four schools agree on the fundamental obligation of Sadaq, they differ in various legal details, such as whether a specific amount must be stipulated at the time of marriage, the treatment of non-monetary forms of Mahr, and the rights of the bride in claiming it. The research also addresses contemporary issues such as delayed payment and the enforceability of Sadaq in modern legal systems. Through a comparative analysis, this project highlights both the shared foundations and unique perspectives of each school, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of Islamic matrimonial law and its practical applications in diverse cultural and legal contexts.

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA (WHATSAPP) ON LANGUAGE USE OF KWARA STATE POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS IN ILORIN
Rukayat Funmilayo Afolabi · BA · Linguistics and Nigeria Languages

This study examines the effect of social media on language use among students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. With the widespread adoption of platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, students’ language habits particularly in English are increasingly shaped by the informal, abbreviated, and often non-standard forms common in online communication. The research focuses on effect of WhatsApp on language use of Kwara State Polytechnic students by observing various group chats of students across various departments. Findings reveal that frequent exposure to social media language has led to the incorporation of slang, acronyms, and unconventional spellings into students’ academic and formal writing, sometimes affecting grammatical accuracy and clarity. However, the study also highlights positive aspects, such as increased creativity and adaptability in language use. The paper concludes by recommending strategies to help students balance digital language trends with the demands of formal communication, especially in academic contexts.
