INVESTIGATION INTO THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF CROP SHELLS
Philemon Olamide Omolayo · BEng · Mechanical Engineering

Abstract This Project addresses the issues in our immediate environment and the society at large. Mechanical Engineering is a discipline in which one of its major aims is to solve problems. The issue of agricultural residue or waste is something that is not far￾fetched at all. This project work involved us in selecting some crop shells that constitute nuisance to our environment and potentially contaminate the soil when not properly processed. These shells that are deemed useless contain treasures if properly examined which we did and got awesome results. The so-called useless waste is actually useful when we concluded our research. After getting these shells from various locations, we subjected it to grounding to powder in order for it to be tested appropriately and correctly in the materials and chemical engineering laboratory. We analyzed results received and discovered the true values of these shells. These supposed waste can actually solve our energy problems and bring about economic growth to our nation. Two of the three selected shells are so good for energy generation while the other can be used as fertilizers in agriculture to improve growth of plants. This study assessed the moisture content, ash content, bulk density, proximate lipid composition as well as thermal behaviour using thermogravimetric analyzer at heating rates 10 °C/min) under nitrogen atmosphere . Statistical tools were used to assess similarities among crops under investigation after which tables with mean values and standard deviation were drawn up to facilitate comparisons.

INCIDENCE AND OCCUPATIONAL RISK FACTORS OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS WITH ADULT PATIENTS AT IRRUA SPECIALIST TEACHING HOSPITAL (ISTH)
Ifeoma Onyesomazu · BSc · ANATOMY

Lumbar spondylosis, a degenerative spinal condition, is a leading cause of chronic back pain, often influenced by occupational and demographic factors. This study aimed to assess the incidence and occupational risk factors associated with lumbar spondylosis among adult patients at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 100 participants aged 18 to 60 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional survey. The results showed a high prevalence of lumbar spondylosis (60.3%), with 26% of cases lasting for over three years. Occupations such as manual labor, trading, and office work were common among the participants. While heavy lifting and repetitive motions were frequently reported, no significant associations were found between these occupational factors and lumbar spondylosis diagnosis (p = 0.566 and p = 0.324, respectively). Additionally, sex was not significantly associated with the condition (p = 0.963). ANOVA analysis indicated no substantial differences in diagnosis across occupational groups (p = 0.556), and logistic regression revealed that factors such as age, sex, marital status, and occupation had limited predictive power for lumbar spondylosis diagnosis. These findings suggest that lumbar spondylosis is prevalent in the Ekpoma, but the relationship with occupational and demographic factors requires further investigation.

ESTIMATION GLOBAL SOLAR RADIATION USING SUNSHINE HOUR AND TEMPERATURE DATA IN KATSINA STATE
Umar Rabiu · BSc · Physics

ABSTRACT In the present work, 10 years (2013-2023) of standard surface meteorological observations on a monthly basis of maximum temperature (MXT), minimum temperature (MNT), and sunshine hours (SHNSH) are utilzed. This is because these three meteorological parameters directly influence solar radiation, trend pattern, and variability at the regional scale. These data were collected from Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) Abuja. The data was obtained in an ASCII file format. These data, are Measured global solar radiation, sunshine hour and minimum and maximum temperature, Which were analyzed based on Sunshine and temperature based models to generate several models (equations) for predicting global solar radiation. These models were subjected to statistical error test methods of the Mean Bias error (MBE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Percentage error (MPE), Coefficient of determination (R), Coefficient of correlation R2 and t test to ascertain the best performing Models. The results of R and R2 are within the range of 0.651 – 1.682 this project successfully demonstrated the feasibility of estimating global solar radiation using sunshine hours and temperature data. The analysis revealed a strong correlation between these parameters and global solar radiation, enabling accurate predictions. The models developed in this study can be applied in various contexts, such as solar energy system design and renewable energy resource assessment.

DETERMINANTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ATTENDING HEALTH CENTERS IN ENUGU URBAN
Ebere Judith Iloanusi · BSc · Nursing Science

Domestic violence remains unacceptably high with numerous consequences ranging from psychological to maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity outcomes in pregnant women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the determinants of domestic violence against women of childbearing age attending health centers in Enugu urban. The study adopted descriptive design. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. A sample size of 155 childbearing women was determined using power analysis. Multi-stage sampling was used to distribute the questionnaires, data was analyzed using frequencies and percentages and presented in tables and figures. Median age range of respondents is 26-35 years (38%). Most were Igbos (83.8%), Christians (98%), married (86.5%). Majority had tertiary education (44.5%), and were traders (43.2%). On physical determinants of domestic violence t he result showed that most of the respondents (37.4%) said that it's when they talk harshly to their husband, (17%) said that it's because their husband is suspecting them of having an affair, (8.3%) said that it's when they come home late, (10.3%) said that it's when they deny their husband sex, (9%) said that it's when their husband hears gossips of what other women are doing and they then assume that they are behaving that way, and (18%) said that it's when they begin to monitor their husband's phone calls and female friends. The researcher recommends that health workers at every level should be trained on how to notice subtle clues of domestic violence on pregnant women and how to broaden the subject assertively.

ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIA FROM PLASTIC POLLUTED SOIL USING ISALE OSUNAS CASESTUDY, OSOGBO, OSUN STATE.
Mary Sefunmi Omotosho · HND · Microbiology

This study focuses on the isolation and identification of bacteria from microplastic-polluted soil, collected at the Isale-Osun dumpsite in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. Microplastics, defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, have accumulated widely in various environments, creating significant ecological and health challenges due to their durability and persistence. These particles act as vectors for pollutants and chemical additives, exacerbating environmental contamination. Soil samples from the dumpsite were subjected to microbiological analysis, targeting the isolation of bacteria capable of degrading plastics. The study utilized serial dilution and biochemical testing to identify bacterial species using microbiological standard. The microbiological assessment revealed a high prevalence of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, and Streptococcus spp., known for their metabolic adaptability and plastic-degrading capabilities. Physicochemical analysis of the soil revealed alkaline conditions (pH 8.2 to 8.8) and moderate temperatures (25–29°C), both of which support microbial growth and enzymatic activities conducive to plastic degradation. Total viable bacterial counts ranged from 2.8 x 10⁶ to 3.5 x 10⁶ CFU/g, indicating substantial microbial presence. The findings suggest that microplastic-polluted soils host active microbial communities capable of contributing to plastic biodegradation. Bacillus species, in particular, demonstrate potential for bioremediation applications. This study recommends further research to enhance the efficacy of microbial degradation pathways and advocates for public awareness and policies addressing microplastic pollution. The study's insights highlight the role of microbial interventions in mitigating plastic waste, with implications for both environmental sustainability and public health.
