AN ASSESSMENT OF PARTY POLITICS AND MEDIA UNDER BUHARI ADMINISTRATION, 2015-2023
Solomon Oteri Kaizer · BSc · Political Science and international relations

This study examined the role of media in shaping political narratives and public opinion during the Buhari administration, from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. A quantitative survey research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from a sample of 112 respondents. The data were analyzed using SPSS27, which facilitated the presentation and interpretation of the findings. The study found that traditional media played a significant role in shaping public opinion during Buhari's presidency, with respondents largely agreeing that it influenced political narratives. However, social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, were found to be more influential than traditional media in shaping political discourse. Social media allowed for a wider diversity of political opinions and narratives, often challenging the perspectives presented by traditional media. Despite this, government policies were seen as negatively impacting press freedom, with many respondents indicating that media outlets were frequently censored or restricted by the government. Social media activism was also identified as a crucial tool in influencing governance and policy decisions, with activists playing an important role in holding the government accountable, even though they faced persecution. The study concluded that media, both traditional and social, played an essential role in shaping political narratives and influencing governance during the Buhari administration. While traditional media generally aligned with the government, social media served as an alternative platform for political engagement and activism. Government policies were seen as suppressing press freedom, creating a climate of self-censorship and fear. The research contributes to the understanding of the media-political relationship in Nigeria, particularly during a period of government repression and media freedom. It also calls for greater protection of press freedom and support for digital activism in promoting political accountability.

THE EFFECT OF ESSENTIAL OIL EXTRACT FROM THE LEAVES OF CATHARANTHUS ROSEUS ON KIDNEY FUNCTION MARKERS IN ALBINO RATS
Chioma Makuachukwu Aniegboka · BSc · Biochemistry

ABSTRACT<br><br> The prevalence of kidney-related diseases has increased globally, creating a need for alternative treatments with fewer side effects than conventional therapies. Catharanthus roseus, commonly known as Madagascar periwinkle, has been widely recognized for its medicinal properties, but its effects on kidney function remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the impact of essential oil extracted from the leaves of C. roseus on key kidney function markers in albino rats, including creatinine, albumin, urea, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The significance of this research lies in evaluating the potential of C. roseus essential oil as a natural therapeutic agent with minimal nephrotoxic risk, which could provide a safer alternative for managing kidney health. In this study, 25 albino rats were divided into five groups: a negative control group (receiving water and Tween 20), a positive control group (exposed to water and insecticide), and three treatment groups receiving varying concentrations of the essential oil emulsion (0.5 ml, 0.75 ml, and 1.0 ml). After four weeks of administration, blood samples were collected and analyzed for kidney function markers. The results showed no significant differences in creatinine, albumin, urea, or BUN levels between the treated groups and the control group (p > 0.05), indicating that the essential oil did not adversely affect renal function. Creatinine levels, a marker of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), remained stable, suggesting that the essential oil did not impair kidney filtration. Similarly, the stability of albumin, urea, and BUN levels implied that nitrogen metabolism and protein handling remained unaffected. Hence, the C. roseus essential oil appears to be safe for use without compromising kidney function, even at higher doses. This study highlights the potential of the oil as a natural therapeutic option for renal health, warranting further research to investigate its long-term safety and mechanisms of action.

Martins Aondofa Agule · BSc · Political science

Revenue Generation In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council Borno State. The objectives are To examine the impact of Boko Haram insurgency on market activities in Maiduguri Metropolitan<br> Council and its effect on internal revenue generation. Using a sample size of 100 respondents, data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed significant disruptions in market activities, including infrastructure damage, reduced consumer demand, and high economic losses. While government interventions such as financial assistance and market rebuilding were noted, their effectiveness was deemed inadequate by most respondents. The study highlights the resilience of market participants, many of whom diversified income sources to mitigate losses, and underscores the need for enhanced security measures, participatory recovery strategies, and infrastructure development to revitalize the local economy. These insights provide a foundation for policymakers to address the socio-economic consequences of insurgency and support sustainable recovery in conflict-affected region

THE EFFECT OF CREATIVE ACCOUNTING PRACTICE ON CORPORATE FAILURE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY ACROSS INDUSTRIES
Bunmi Temiloluwa Adedeji · HND · Accountancy

Abstract<br> This study investigates the effects of creative accounting practices on corporate failure in selected Nigerian industries. Creative accounting, characterized by the manipulation of financial statements within the confines of accounting standards, often presents an overly favorable view of a company's financial health, leading to a misrepresentation of its true economic condition. The research explores the extent to which these practices have contributed to the collapse of various corporations, including high-profile cases in the banking and oil sectors. The study utilized frequency tables and percentages for data analysis, and for hypothesis testing, advanced statistics of Chi-square. The data collected was analyzed statistically in form of tabular presentation with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21. The findings reveal that while creative accounting may provide short-term financial benefits, it significantly undermines investor confidence, distorts financial markets, and poses long-term risks to economic stability. The study concludes by recommending more stringent regulatory measures and greater emphasis on financial transparency to prevent future corporate failures.

BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF SOME COMMERCIAL PREPARED ZOBO MARKETED IN ENUGU METROPOLIS
Valentine Toochukwu Ibeh · HND · Microbiology

ABSTRACT<br> This study was carried out to determine the bacteriological quality of zobo drink<br> marketed within Enugu metropolis. The zobo drink was prepared and evaluated<br> using standard microbiological techniques. The pour plate technique was employed<br> for isolation, from the result observed, the sample analyzed there was no bacteria<br> growth on the bacteria media (Nutrient agar and MacConkey Agar) used. The<br> bacteria isolated were identified based on cultural, morphological, Gram reaction<br> and biochemical characteristics. These bacteria include Staphylococcus aureus,<br> and Escherichia coli. The presence of Escherichia coli indicates Faecal<br> contamination while Staphycococcus aureus and indicated poor and unhygienic<br> handling of the beverage. Therefore, the result revealed that the samples of zobo<br> drink were directly and indirectly contaminated with high levels of pathogenic<br> microorganisms. The present findings revealed that zobo drinks retailed and sold in<br> these market are potential vehicles for transmitting food borne illness, thus the<br> need to develop good manufacturing process (GMP) and post production<br> preservation and packing techniques.
