ENTOMOLOGICAL SURVEYS OF INDOORS MOSQUITOES IN FEMAL HOSTEL IN UMARU MUSA YARADUA UNIVERSITY
Khadijah Maude Ibrahim · BSc · Biology

This study investigates the diversity and abundance of diurnal insects on the campus of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, Nigeria. The research aims to assess the ecological roles of insects within this university environment and to contribute to the understanding of local biodiversity. Insect sampling was conducted over a period of two months, from November to December 2024, across different habitats on the campus, including grasslands, gardens, and surrounding wooded areas. Using hand, sweep nets, traps, and visual observations, the study identified and categorized insect by order, family, and species. Data on the abundance and distribution of species were recorded, and species diversity was quantified using Relative Abundance Formular. A total of 22 insect with 12 species were recorded, with significant variation in abundance across habitats. The study revealed a higher concentration of species in areas with more vegetation cover, such as gardens and wooded areas, compared to open grasslands. Insect diversity was found to be high, with notable representation from orders such as Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, and Diptera. These findings highlight the importance of the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), campus as a valuable site for insect biodiversity and provide a basis for further studies on the ecological dynamics of campus environments in arid zones. The research also emphasizes the need for conservation strategies to protect the rich insect fauna that contribute to ecosystem services such as pollination and pest control.

EVALUATION OF SELECTED MARKERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS (MALONDIALDEHYDE, CATALASE AND SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE) IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER FED WITH GREEN TEA
Mary Oluwatomilola Abu · BSc · Medical Laboratory Science

    ABSTRACT

Green tea is a popular beverage which is consumed by several people all over the world. The increasing use has adduced to its antioxidant properties. It is good to deepen the understanding of the health modulating effects of green tea consumption. This study seeks to determine whether the consumption of green tea enhances the antioxidant enzyme activities and lowers a marker of lipid peroxidation in Drosophila melanogaster. It also evaluated the survival rate of Drosophila melanogaster fed with different concentrations of green tea for duration of 21 days. Flies were maintained at 40 to a vial (20 males and 20 females) at room temperature under 12-hr light and 12hr dark cycles. Flies were fed with hot aqueous extract of Camellia Senesis (0.2mg/mL, 0.4mg/mL, 0.6mg/mL, 0.8mg/mL and 1.0mg/mL) green tea supplemented cornmeal diet. The survival rate was determined be counting both the live and dead flies daily. At the end of this treatment the data obtained were accumulated and plotted as percentage of live and dead flies and compared with controls. Also, the flies were homogenized in phosphate buffer, superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyde were determined using spectrophotometric method. The data were compared using Student’s-t-test and significant value was set at p

James Ini Jackson · HND · Public Administration

This study sought to determine the extent to which application of 21st century

digitalization techniques will enhance effective service delivery in Akwa Ibom

state public service. In order to carry out this study objectively, three specific

objectives and three research questions were postulated to guide the study. А

descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of this

study comprised all the 158 level 14-17 public servant. Simple random and

proportionate sampling techniques were used in selecting a sample of 81 level

14-17 public servant for this study. A questionnaire with 21 structured items

designed by the researchers were used for data collection for this study. The

questionnaire was face-validated by the supervisors. Mean and standard

deviation statistics was used in answering the research questions. The findings

of the study reveal that the application of 21st century digitalization techniques

will enhance effective service delivery in Akwa Ibom state public service. Based

on the findings, it is concluded that employees have to obtain necessary soft

skills on how to use 21st century digitalization techniques for effective delivery.

It is recommended, among other things, that Government should focus on

developing digital and data-related skills in the public sector, creating profiles

and career paths based on forecasted needs, and providing programme for

training and retraining of civil servants.

EVALUATION OF THE BODY FAT INDICES OF SOME RURAL AND URBAN ADULTS POPULATIONS FROM EMOHUA AND OBIO-AKPOR IN RIVERS STATE
Hilary Matthew Nwankwo · BSc · Biochemistry

This study aims to assess the body fat indices of adult populations in urban and ruralareas of
Rivers State, Nigeria. Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, waist
circumference, and hip circumference, were collected from a representative sample of adult
participants from the age range of 15-65years. Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist-to-Hip Ratio
(WHR), and other relevant body fat indices were calculated to evaluate the prevalence of
overweight and obesity. Analysis of body fat indices revealed slight but statistically difference in
values in estimated total body fat, relative fat mass and fat-independent indices between the two
populations. The results obtained from this study shows that the urban population are likely to
have more of individuals who are prone to obesity, CVD, diabetes (type 2), and other health
related problems

DEVELOPMENT OF A DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM
Idris Ojo Raji · HND · Agric and Bio-Environmental Engineering

    ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to develop a cost-effective and efficient drip irrigation system tailored for small to medium-sized agricultural operations. Drip irrigation is known for its potential to conserve water and improve crop yields by delivering water directly to plant roots with minimal loss. To achieve this, the study is structured with three key objectives. First, the irrigation system is designed to optimize water distribution, considering factors like soil type, crop water requirements, and regional climatic conditions. Second, the system is carefully installed and calibrated to ensure durability and effective operation under varying field conditions. Finally, physicochemical analyses are conducted on both soil and irrigation water to assess essential parameters such as pH, salinity, and nutrient levels, which influence system performance and crop health. This study provides valuable insights into the practical implementation of drip irrigation systems, contributing to sustainable water management and enhanced agricultural product. The soil test revealed the following key results: 125.9g of moisture contents, 537.1g of bulk density, and 426.6g of soil porosity.
