CITIZEN JOURNALISM: PLATFORM FOR INFORMATION DISSEMINATION: A STUDY OF AWKA METROPOLIS
Blessed Ifebuche Chime · HND · Mass Communication

This study examines the influence of Citizen Journalism on the residents of Awka, focusing on how social media platforms serve as a primary source of news and information. The research highlights that Citizen Journalism plays a significant role in the daily information consumption of Awka residents, with a considerable percentage accessing news through social media platforms. However, despite its popularity, Citizen Journalism is often viewed with skepticism regarding credibility. The preference for entertainment content suggests that many engage with Citizen Journalism for recreational purposes rather than as a primary source of factual information. The findings indicate that while social media is a widely used tool for news access, there are significant concerns about the accuracy and trustworthiness of the content shared. The study concludes that Citizen Journalism, particularly on social media, serves as an alternative news source, though it lacks the traditional gatekeeping found in professional journalism. To improve the reliability of information, the study recommends that social media be used more for disseminating important official information and that media professionals engage more deeply in online journalism to enhance the credibility and accuracy of content shared on these platforms.

ISOLATION OF DIAZOTROPHIC BACTERIA IN CRUDE OIL- INUNDATED SOIL
Godstime Ekpo Henshaw · BSc · Microbiology

Contamination of the ecosystem by crude oil affects the microbial diversity and activities in the affected environment. This study examined the effect of crude oil pollution on the population of diazotrophic bacteria from crude oil inundated soil. A total of 8 samples were collected from 4 different point of crude oil impacted soil (NBPT1, NBPT2, NBPT3 and NBPT3) in Nembe (from the depth of 0-15cm and 15-30cm) and unpolluted sample (control) and the samples were transported aseptically to the laboratory for analysis. APHA methods were used for physicochemical analysis while culturing was on selective; Winogradsky 1, Winogradsky 2, Rhizobium and Azobacter media incubated at 28oC ± 2oC. Average total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration of 17600mg/kg was recorded which is higher than the 5000mg/kg intervention limit. The count of Nitrifying bacteria (Nitrobacter ) obtained ranged from 1.22×106CFU/g to 4.8 ×108CFU/g with the control sample having the highest count while the sample, NBPT1 (15-30cm) recorded the lowest count. The count of nitrosomonasranged from 1.21×106 to 1.64×108 with the control sample recording the highest count and the lowest count was recorded in the sample NBPT3 (15-30cm). The count of Azobacter ranged from 1.17×106CFU/g to 4.3×108CFU/g with the control sample having the highest count and the lowest count was in the sample, NBPT3 (15-30cm). The count of Rhizobium ranged from 1.78×106CFU/g to 2.9×108CFU/g with the control sample having the highest count and the lowest count of Rhizobium was recorded in the sample NBPT1(15-30cm). The study showed that crude oil spill and soil depth resulted in the reduction in population of the different diazotrophic bacteria groups.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUTH BEHAVIOUR IN NIGERIA
Victoria Osariemen Igberaese · BSc · Sociology

This study examines the impact of social media on youth behaviour in Nigeria. The rapid
growth of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, and X
(formerly Twitter) has significantly changed the way youths communicate, interact, and
access information. While social media provides opportunities for education, communication,
business development, and social networking, it also presents challenges that influence the
behaviour of young people in both positive and negative ways.
The objectives of the study are to assess the extent of social media usage among Nigerian
youths, identify the purposes of usage, and examine its effects on their academic performance
and behaviour. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected
through structured questionnaires administered to respondents, and the responses were
analyzed using frequency tables, simple percentages, and chi-square statistical tools.
Findings from the study revealed that most Nigerian youths use social media daily, with
entertainment being the major purpose of usage. The study also found that social media has a
significant influence on youth behaviour and contributes to both positive outcomes such as
communication and learning, and negative outcomes such as academic distraction, addiction,
exposure to immoral content, and cybercrime tendencies.

ONLINE PROJECT REGISTRATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM(A CASE STUDY OF DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE, FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC KAURA NAMODA ZAMFARA ASTATE)
Saifullahi Bashir · HND · Computer Science

It is very tedious to manage and control students final year projects using manual or classical processes. This project is aimed at developing an online system which manages the activity of students project registration management. Firstly, all students must be registered on the application by the administrator. Then registered students can log in with their ID and password to authenticate. This system will manage the database and maintain a list of all student or group of student that have registered as a finalist in this site, and for those students that been shortlisted who have Passed the eligibility criteria as set by the lecturer/superisor. The project would also tackle the problemof misplacement or damage of files and record. This method brings more adantages in the sense that students can easily register their project topics at their own coninient time. The department will spend less since there is no need for print for student and it will save time and cost.

DISEASE DIAGNOSIS AND DRUG RECOMMENDATION SYSTEM USING PRINCIPAL COMPONENT ANALYSIS (PCA) FOR DIMENSIOANLITY REDUCTION
Fatimat Usman · HND · Computer Science

The rapid advancement in healthcare technologies has spurred the development of intelligent systems capable of enhancing disease diagnosis and drug recommendation processes. This research presents a Disease Diagnosing and Drug Recommendation System that leverages Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction, aiming to improve the efficiency and accuracy of medical predictions. High-dimensional medical data, often characterized by redundancy and noise, poses significant challenges to traditional machine learning models. By applying PCA, the system effectively reduces the feature space, retaining only the most relevant components that contribute significantly to disease classification. The reduced dataset is then used to train predictive models for diagnosing various diseases and recommending appropriate drug treatments based on patient history and symptom patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that integrating PCA enhances the performance of classification algorithms by reducing overfitting and computational complexity, while maintaining high diagnostic accuracy. This approach supports clinicians in making informed decisions, thereby contributing to personalized and data-driven healthcare solutions.
