EFFECTS OF SINGLE PARENTHOOD ON CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT IN SOME SELECTED PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN CHIKUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KADUNA STATE
Sandra Gagare Luka · BSc · Sociology

This study examines the effects of single parenthood on children’s development in selected public secondary schools in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, with emphasis on academic performance, emotional development, social relationships, and coping mechanisms. Using a descriptive survey research design, structured questionnaire were administered to students in Ungwan Boro and Sabon Tasha secondary schools. Out of the 180 questionnaire administered, 169 were completed and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that single parenthood has a notable influence on children’s academic performance, largely due to reduced parental supervision, limited guidance, and economic challenges that negatively affect schooling outcomes. Emotional development among children from single-parent households varied, with some experiencing low self-esteem and emotional distress, while others displayed resilience when supported by parents, peers, and teachers. Social relationships were also affected, as many children encountered difficulties in forming friendships, participating in group activities, and engaging fully with peers. Despite these challenges, the study found that children employed various coping strategies, including seeking support from teachers, participating in extracurricular activities, and using avoidance strategies to manage stress associated with their family circumstances. The study further highlights that the impact of single parenthood is shaped by additional factors such as parental involvement, socio-economic status, and the availability of school and community support systems. The study concludes by recommending that single parents strengthen support networks through extended family, community-based programs, and parent support groups to enhance their children’s academic performance and emotional well-being.

DEFORMATION MONITORING OF AMAKOHIA FLYOVER IN OWERRI NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, IMO STATE NIGERIA.
Wisdom Chinonso Ihegboro · BSc · Surveying and Geoinformatics

This research focused on the deformation monitoring of the Amakohia flyover along Orlu Road in Owerri North, Imo State, utilizing geodetic techniques. A reconnaissance survey, including steel tape measurements, was conducted to assess the site conditions. Three control stations were established: IMSU/2024/C1 on Egbeada Road, IMSU/2024/C2 on Akwakuma Road, and IMSU/2024/C3 towards Orji Flyover. Additionally, nine reference points (IMSU/2024/R1 to IMSU/2024/R9) were marked on the flyover. The 3 control stations were made of concrete pillars measuring 150 cm in length and 40 cm in width, while the 9 reference points were marked with white oil paint and concrete nails driven into the ground. Monitoring points were also set up along both sides and the centerline of the flyover at 10-meter intervals. Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) observations were performed using the control extension method with CHCNAV i50 and Trimble DGPS to determine the coordinates of the control and reference points, with the base instrument located at the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors Secretariat (NIS) in Owerri. Control observations was observed at one hour each, while reference stations were observed at 30-minute intervals. The data from the control stations and reference points was analyzed using Trimble Business Center software. Precise leveling (Leica Wide Heerbrugg NA24 and Accessories ) operations were conducted to obtain the leveling data for 93 monitoring stations, further refined using the Height of Collimation (HOC) method to determine their reduced levels. GPS and leveling observations at the reference and monitoring stations were conducted over three epochs: November 16, 2024; December 18, 2024; and January 25, 2025, and analyzed using Trimble Business Center. The leveling data was also examined using the HOC method. To assess the deformation of the flyover, two methods were applied: mathematical and statistical analysis. The mathematical approach involved comparing and subtracting the data from the three epochs. The difference in coordinates for the first and second epochs showed a maximum difference of (EASTINGS = 0.434, NORTHINGS = 0.437) and a minimum difference of (EASTINGS = -0.003, NORTHINGS = -0.010). The difference in coordinates for the second and third epochs showed a maximum difference of (EASTINGS = 0.009, NORTHINGS = -0.003) and a minimum difference of (EASTINGS = -0.004, NORTHINGS = -0.019). The statistical analysis used the correlation coefficient in Microsoft Excel, the correlation coefficient for the first and second Easting Coordinates for the first and second epoch was r= 0.998157395 while that for the second and third epochs was r=0.998157395. For the first and second Northings Coordinates, the first and second epoch was r= 0.999997446 while that for the second and third epochs was r=0.999999995. The above results showed that there was no notable deformation on the flyover during the period of observation but however, the study recommends continuous monitoring of the flyover to ensure its safety and to prevent potential hazards.

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT PRESERVATION METHODS (CURING, SMOKING AND FREEZING) ON CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF BEEF.
Tina Enyoojo Sule · BSc · Animal Science

This research evaluated the effects of three preservation methods curing, freezing, and smoking on the chemical composition of beef in Kano State, Nigeria. The study examined the nutritional aspects of meat quality as influenced by the preservation methods. The parameters considered include proximate (moisture, crude protein, ether extract, ash and NFE) and the mineral nutrient elements ( Ca,Mg,Cu,Fe,P,K,Zn). Standard analytical procedures were employed to assess the preserved beef samples. Findings revealed that preservation methods significantly (P < 0.05) influenced most of the proximate and mineral parameters . Cured samples recorded higher fat and ash content, likely due to moisture loss and mineral salt absorption. Frozen beef maintained the highest crude protein levels, indicating minimal structural degradation during storage. Smoked samples exhibited elevated nitrogen-free extract values, which may result from thermal concentration of soluble carbohydrates. Mineral analysis showed that frozen samples retained more phosphorus, potassium, and zinc, while cured beef recorded increased calcium and magnesium. Copper and iron levels remained relatively stable across all treatments. The study concludes that preservation techniques substantially affect the nutritional quality of beef. Freezing proved most effective in preserving protein and key minerals, while curing and smoking influenced fat and carbohydrate-related components. It was recommended that different preservation methods( curing, smoking and freezing) have different effect on chemical properties of beef.
