UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND ARMED ROBBERY IN PORT-HACOURT RIVERSTATE
Catherine Attai · BSc · Sociology

Unemployment, poverty, and armed robbery form a multifaceted and interconnected triad of socio-economic

chaffenges in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria. This abstract provides an overview of the intricate refationship

between these issues, shedding light on the deep-rooted problems faced by the city's residents. Port Harcourt, known

as the oil capital of Nigeria, has witnessed significant economic growth over the years due to its proximity to the oil-

rich Niger Delta region. However, this prosperity has not been evenly distributed, leading to a paradoxical situation

where high unemployment and widespread poverty coexist with the city's oil wealth. As a result, a disconcerting

increase in armed robbery cases has been observed, making it imperative to investigate the dynamics of this

correlation. Unemployment rates in Port Harcourt are notably high, with a substantial portion of the population lacking

access to formal employment opportunities. This circumstance exacerbates the levels of poverty in the city, leaving

many residents unable to meet their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and healthcare. It is within this context of

economie vulnerability that armed robbery thrives as an alternative means of survival for some individuals. Armed

robbery has become a pressing concern in Port Harcourt, with incidents occurring frequently and often escalating to

violence. The link between unemployment and poverty in the city and the upsurge in criminal activities, particularly

armed robbery, undersceres the urgency of addressing these intertwined challenges comprehensively

Hassan Mohammed Isah · BA · Biochemistry and molecular Biology

    ABSTRACT

The oils were extracted from both coconut (cocos nucifera), sed groundnuts ( Arachishypogaea) using standard method. Coconut and groundnut soils were yield wore 38.9% and 40.0% respectively. And the physicochemical parameters (acid value, lodian value, peroxide value, saponication value, and free fatty acid) were determined. Acid valet, sodine value and free fatty acid for coconut oil were (3.366 -0.027 mg/kah), (2.667 40.061. 2/100g), and (0.149 ± 0.003%) from the sample respectively. While ground nuts Oil it was found that Acid value, lodine value and free fatty acid were (2.806 0.003mgloh/g). (3.81 0.03g 12/100g), and 10.028 0.028%) respectively. The coconut oil had saponification value of (18.235 ±0.05mg/kohig )and peroxide value of (2.65 0.04meų 120 2)while ground nut soil had saponification value of (65.923 + 0.55mg/koh/g) and peroxide value of (3.15 0.046meq 120 2). And it was found that coconut oil has higher physiochemical parameters in acid value and fice fatty acid thas ground nut soil while ground nut oil has higher physiochemical parameters in iodine value, peroxide value and saponification value than coconut oil.

HEAVY METAL TOLERANCE OF BACTERIAL ISOLATES FROM SELECTED DUMPSITES IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
Omobolarinwa Tomiwa Soleye · BSc · Microbiology

This study investigates the ability of bacterial isolates from selected dumpsites in Lagos State, Nigeria, to tolerate heavy metals commonly found in leachate. Samples were collected and cultured to identify predominant bacteria, after which their resistance to metals such as lead, cadmium, zinc, and chromium was assessed. Results revealed varying tolerance levels, with some isolates showing strong resistance that suggests adaptation to polluted environments. These findings highlight the potential use of certain bacteria in bioremediation, while also emphasising the environmental and public health risks associated with persistent heavy metal contamination in waste sites.

A REVIEW OF SIMPLE MOTION PURSUIT DIFFERENTIAL GAME
Hameedah Aderonke Abdulraheem · BSc · Mathematical Science

    Abstract

We study a simple motion pursuit differential game of many pursuers and one evader in a

Hilbert space l2. The control functions of the pursuers and evader are subject to integral and

geometric constraints respectively. Duration of the game is denoted by a positive number θ.

Pursuit is said to be completed if there exist strategies uj of the pursuers Pj such that for any

admissible control v(·) of the evader E the inequality

ky(τ ) − xj (τ )k ≤ lj

is satisfied for some j ∈ {1, 2, . . .} and some time τ . In this paper, sufficient conditions for the

completion of pursuit were obtained. Consequently, strategies of the pursuers that ensure the

completion of pursuit are constructed.

ANALYSIS OF POTASSIUM BROMATE IN SOME BREAD AND FLOUR SAMPLES SOLD IN DUTSE TOWN.
Muhammad Auwal Muhammad · BSc · Chemistry

Potassium bromate, is an oxidizing agent and one of the best and cheapest dough improvers in the baking industry. Due to its positive effects it plays a major role in the bread-making industry. Potassium bromate has significant effect on food biomolecules, such as starch and protein, as it affects the extent of gelatinization, viscosity, swelling characteristics as well as gluten proteins: it removes the sulfhydryl group and leads to the formation of disulfide linkages and thus improves the bread properties. The aim of this work is to determine the potassium bromate content in bread and flour sample obtain in Dutse. Ten (10) different bread brands and three (3) wheat flour brands were randomly obtained from bakeries in Dutse metropolitan. The samples were analysed for potassium bromate using standard methods, the results obtained revealed the presence of potassium bromate in three (3) of the bread samples and none was detected in flour samples analysed. The concentration of bromate in the bread samples ranged between 0.02 - 1.12 ug/g. This study shows that some bakers in Dutse still make use of potassium bromate as bread improver despite its ban in 1993 by the Nigerian National Agency for Food. Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
