ProjectUniversity of Maiduguri, Borno State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-45552431764004865ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF MAIZE GRAIN MARKETING IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS, BORNO STATE, NIGERIAMuhammad Bulama Muhammad · BSc · agricultural economicsABSTRACT
This study was conducted to provide an economic analysis of maize grain marketing in Maiduguri Metropolis, Borno State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the maize marketers, identify the marketing channels, estimate the costs and returns, and identify the constraints faced. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select sixty (60) respondents from the Monday and Muna markets. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and gross margin analysis. The results revealed that the maize marketing sector is dominated by male (86.7%) retailers (86.7%) within the age bracket of 21-35 years (41.7%), who primarily rely on personal savings (40%) for capital. The most common marketing channel involved sourcing maize directly from producers (55%) and selling through retailers. The gross margin analysis showed that maize marketing is profitable, with a gross margin of ₦1,760 per 50kg bag and a gross margin ratio of 4.4%. However, the profitability is constrained by several factors, with inadequate capital (31.4%) being the most significant, followed by inadequate storage facilities (25.4%) and inadequate transportation (17.7%). The study concludes that while maize marketing is a viable enterprise in Maiduguri Metropolis, its potential is hampered by high operational costs and critical infrastructural and financial constraints. It is recommended that stakeholders facilitate improved access to credit, develop modern storage facilities, and enhance rural transportation infrastructure to boost efficiency and profitability in the maize marketing system.

ProjectEkiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State · 2025 · NDN PRJ-196411331764004164GEOLOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF QUARZITIC ROCK OF ADO-EKITI SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIAOlabayo Martins Thomas · BSc · GeologyThis study examines the geological and geochemical characteristics of quartzitic rocks in

Ado-Ekiti, Southwestern Nigeria, within the Precambrian Basement Complex. These

quartzitic formations, predominantly composed of quartz, form significant ridges that provide

insights into the geological processes that shaped the region over millions of years. The

quartzitic rocks occur as minor yet geologically important units amidst a predominantly

gneissic and migmatitic terrain. Typically found in interlayered sequences with other

metamorphic rocks, their origins suggest sedimentary precursors subjected to intense

metamorphism. This layering indicates a complex geological history marked by sediment

deposition and tectonic activity. Geochemical analyses indicate that the quartzitic rocks

consist mainly of interlocking anhedral to subhedral quartz grains, characterized by a

granoblastic texture. Minor components include feldspar, muscovite, biotite, microcline, and

hornblende. The high silica content, often exceeding 90% SiO₂, underscores the quartz- dominated composition. Trace element analysis shows low concentrations of aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium, reflecting limited feldspar and mica presence. Distinctive features

of the quartz grains, such as undulose extinction and deformation bands, reveal significant

tectonic stress impacts throughout their history. Quartzofeldspathic veins observed in the

southern study area indicate past intrusive activity, while visible faults and joints highlight

geological stresses that have influenced erosion and alteration of the original formations. In

conclusion, the quartzitic rocks of Ado-Ekiti represent a transition from sedimentary to

metamorphic processes, reflecting the extensive geological events that shaped southwestern

Nigeria. Understanding these characteristics enhances knowledge of the region's geological

evolution and informs future exploration and resource management efforts.
